Have a memorable New Years and start the year off right with a holiday at a distant destination. Imagine waking up on the first day of the year to spectacular scenery after ringing it in with fellow travellers the night before. It’s a great time to travel and experience cities at their most festive. Many tour companies such as Albatross Tours offer New Year’s packages so you can celebrate in style. Whether you are looking to party it up or have a relaxing escape, here are three destinations that will inspire you.

1. Swiss Alps

Enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Swiss Alps and see in the New Year on a snowy mountainside. Spend your days skiing on the slopes and then cosy up in the evenings with mulled wine in your chalet. There are many picturesque towns and cities to visit too, such as Lucerne and Montreux. Both beautiful cities are set on stunning lakes with views of the mountains and each can even be easily accessed by rail. Take a journey to the highest rail station in Europe, Jungfraujoch, for some seriously impressive views. A trip to the Swiss Alps will make for an adventurous, festive New Year’s you won’t forget.

2. Venice

Use the New Year as an excuse to visit this romantic city, with all of its beautiful bridges and canals. Follow the crowds to St. Mark’s Square for the countdown to midnight. The bells ringing from St. Mark’s Basilica will signal the start of the fireworks display. There are plenty of places to view the fireworks from the city, allowing you to avoid the crowds if you prefer. Just make sure you book in early so you don’t miss out on securing yourself a spot on the island for the party of the year. Take advantage of your time in Italy and take the trip back to the mainland after the celebrations are finished for a relaxing break in beautiful Tuscany.

3. Madeira

For a serious New Year’s party, head to the Madeira islands for all the celebrations you could ask for. The city of Funchal is the centre of the action, with people coming from all over for a magnificent firework display that takes place over the bay. Although the city’s amphitheatre design allows amazing views from many vantage points, you can also book yourself a spot on one of the many cruise ships that position themselves out to sea for an unforgettable panorama. Celebrate the night at amazing restaurants, or at the many ‘revellion’ parties held at hotels. It truly is an amazing atmosphere. After the celebrations are over, spend the first days of the New Year recovering and relaxing in the winter sun.
