InstaMeets | A complete guide

The first time I mentioned to someone that I was going to an InstaMeet, they looked at me as if I was an ogre. “what the heck is an Instameet?”

It’s basically a great way for people within the Instagram community to meet each other in person and take photos together around one spot. We gather in a pre-determined place, at a set time, to take photos then upload them to Instagram. That’s it!

How to join an InstaMeet

There are different ways on how you can get an invitation to an InstaMeet.

Sometimes the Instagrammer that is hosting the Instameet will send out an invitation on their Instagram account. The photo will have all the details of the event over the top of the image, letting everyone know when and where to meet for the Instameet. This is usually an InstaMeet open to everyone.

Other times, the Instagrammer who is hosting sends out a private invitation to bloggers and Instagrammers.

InstaMeet Meet & Greet

This is easy. Just look for a group of people decked out with their photography gear!

Once you spot your crew make the most of the time until the event start.

Make sure you introduce yourself and let the others know your Instagram handle. Sometimes bringing your business cards is a plus! It’s hard to remember all the different handles.

While you wait for the event to start, this is the perfect time to get any tips about apps, photography and anything else Instagram related.

How does an InstaMeet run?

There are different ways on how an Instameet can run, depending on the host.

  1. You can have a guided tour included in the event, where a guide will talk about the history of the place and post out details that might be relevant to your photography work. This is how the InstaMeet Lisboa in Marquês de Pombal Palace run. I love this way, we get to know much more about the area and it because easier to then create a story around it.
  2. You all disperse to set up your position to catch the whatever is at the location worth photographing. I find this no so good for networking.
  3. You do a photo walk from point A to point B and take photos along the way. This works well in cities, like a city tour.

I’m not a professional. Can I join?

Sure! You don’t need to be a professional photographer to join an InstaMeet. If you have a smartphone, you’re set. Trust me!

InstaMeets are a social and fun event. There’s a bit of work around it but I believe the great thing about it is the people that you get to meet and share knowledge with.
