As I write this, I’m sitting in a comfortable recliner in front of a large pool. In my view there’s this beautiful garden, with palm trees and native Australian plants, healthy green grass and I can almost hear the waves from the beach close to my new home. A dog that melts your heart – the king of this house – is my sole companion.
This has been my home for the last couple of days. Paul and I are living here for free. I was having a cup of tea, when I let out a slow, hopeful, surprised: REAAAAAALLLLLYYYYY!!! The discovery was just too good to be true. No rent, No utilities, a Holiday for Free!
We are housesitting!!!
We take care of the dog and home while the owners are off on their own travels. Not only does it feel like a really cheap holiday, it gives an intimate experience in a new locale with complete immersion in a local neighbourhood. It really gives you the ability to live like a local in a partiular corner of the world, even if it’s just for 6 days.
More importantly than just living rent-free, the house-sitting experience allows you to have authentic travel experiences in ways that more traditional accommodation like hotels and hostels just can’t provide.
Most times we are able to kick-back and soak in the good fortune, but there are moments when you have to work but it makes it more interesting, especially if you have been on the road a while..
