Whilst outdoor activities in the winter time can be an exciting injection of fun during the quieter months, there are a few things to look out for when bracing the elements. 1| Ensure You Have All Your Camping Gear
Similarly to camping in the warmer months, you’ll need to ensure that your camping arsenal is well stocked. This means making sure you have all the camping gear that you will need, some of which include a pop up tent, sleeping bags, backpacks, camping stoves, pots, pans and other items that you’ll need along the way. Now, when it comes to camping or heading outdoors in winter, it is of utmost importance that you shy away from low-quality gear, as the last thing you want to find is a gaping hole in your tent or sleeping bag. Whilst this may be a small concern in Summer, it will prove to be a big issue when temperatures dip down to single digits at night. 2| Rug Up!
This comes as no surprise, but it is really important that you rug up when you’re engaging in outdoor activities in winter. Think thermal wear, scarves, puffy coats, fleece pants, rain jackets, thick socks and wooly hats to keep your ears warm. You want to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible, whilst keeping yourself warm at all times. We also highly suggest sleeping with your clothes as it will offer you a little extra warmth overnight, ensuring you get a good night of sleep before the days activities.
3| Proper Nutrition is Key
When engaging in outdoor activities in the colder months, it is of utmost importance that you pay extra care and attention to your body and overall health. This means staying hydrated and eating lots of calories to sustain you throughout your hike or camping trip. Proper nutrition is essential in helping your body stay warm, so always get a good hot breakfast into you at the start of the day. Don’t forget to sip on lots of plain water and hot cocoa along the way as well! Some great ideas for quick snacks include protein bars, granola bars, jerky, trail mix and any other portable snack that is calorically and nutritionally dense. Remember that your body is going to require some extra energy to keep itself warm, so get ready to do a ton of snacking!
4| Brush Up on Your Fire Starting Skills
Lighters and matches are a fantastic, quick and easy way to start a campfire, but what happens if it starts pouring outside and said items get damp? This is why it is important that you bring a portable flint along with you to help start your fire, as it works regardless of rain or shine. Brush up on some fire starting skills before you head out on your adventure, just so you’re prepared for whatever the weather decides to throw at you!
5| Choose Your Locations Wisely
Last but not least, whether you’re going on a hike or a weekend camping trip, it is always advised that you choose your location wisely. It takes a fair bit of research to decide on an ideal winter campsite, and some of the things to look out for are adequate amounts of shelter, a site that is flat so that you can easily pitch a tent and areas with packed snow as it is able to insulate heat much better than loose snow. Ideally, you’ll want to pick a site that is close enough to civilisation in the case of an emergency. Ensure that you have a way of charging your phone as well, as it is important that you are able to make contact with others at all times during your trip.
