So you thought the Gold Coast was all theme parks, high rises and sprawling mall? Think again… There’s a new generation of entrepreneurs committed to showcasing the area’s culinary and creative brio.
It s only 4 pm, but already a steady line of people are filing into Flinders Keepers, a newbie bar restaurant in Burleigh Heads. Wether they are drawn to the quirky interior – look up and you will see there is a gravity defying bookcase suspended from the ceiling- or the inventive cocktail list, one thing is for sure: gold coast is not about Surfer Paradise anymore.
The area is growing with confidence and if when i got to australia in 2009 not much was happening in Burleigh at night time now this is the place to be.
Burleigh might be leading the way when it comes to culinary revival, but there’s plenty to explore elsewhere. Take Pablo Pablo in Palm Beach or Pigs and Pint in Chevron Island or even overlooking the sand dunes, in Miami, the Paddock Bakery- a lovingly restored 80 year old cottage with easy on the eye, up-cycled decor and an intimate garden setting.
Make sure you follow the locals leads and you won’t get lost!
