Lake Tahoe is one of my favorite places in the world. It’s nestled in the mountains between the border of California and Nevada. This freshwater lake is the second deepest in the US and is one of the most beautiful places in the entire country. The water is a deep blue and green, which is surrounded by tall snow-capped mountains. Sounds like a perfect vacation, right?
You can find some beautiful vacation rentals in Lake Tahoe where you can come for a few days to relax at any time of the year. I’d suggest that you spend at least a few days so that you can enjoy everything that this place has to offer.
1| Take a Boat Trip
There’s nothing better to do when you’re at a lake than to take a boat trip. You have several options available to you including a tour on a traditional Mississippi-style paddle boat. This is a great way to experience the beauty of this lake.
2| Go Hiking
You have lots of trails and opportunities to go hiking in the mountains. This is a great way to spend a day but remember that bears do live in these mountains. Most of the time they won’t approach you and are completely harmless. You should shout and make a lot of noise to scare them away if they make you feel uncomfortable or threatened.
3| Do Some Water Sports
The lake is famous for its water sports. You can come here and go kayaking and sailing in some of the towns. It’s also easy to find an instructor who can teach you the basics. I learned to kayak at Lake Tahoe ten years ago and I still enjoy doing it to this day.
4| Relax on the Lakeside Beaches
You can find small beaches around the edge of the lake where people come to sunbathe. This is perfect since you can expect 75% of the days to be sunny with beautiful weather. After relaxing, head into the lake for a quick dip. You can always bring a few beers or a bottle of wine to sip whilst admiring the scenery.
5| Explore the Lakeside Towns
The lake is surrounded by lots of small towns. A great day trip is to rent a car and go exploring. Some are charming and picturesque whereas others are mediocre. You can also check out the towns on the other side of the border. The views are amazing and you’re certain to get lots of beautiful photographs along the way.
6| Visit a Casino on the Nevada Side
This is related to the point above. If you’re staying on the California side, why not head over to Nevada. This is full of casinos and has plenty of entertainment. Even if you’re not here to gamble, it’s still a great place to come and enjoy the atmosphere.
7| Enjoy the Views
The scenery around Lake Tahoe makes it one of the most beautiful places in the US. The views attract people from all over the country and even a few international travelers. Expect to see a magnificent blue-green water against a backdrop of rugged, snowcapped mountains. My favorite part is that the views change with the seasons, which means you’ll get a different experience based on the time of the year you visit.
8| Have a Picnic
You can hike along some of the trails or head down to the side of the lake and have a picnic. This is one of the most romantic things to do at the lake. A picnic is a great activity to do with the kids.
9| Go Horse Riding
If you’re into horse riding, you’re going to love Lake Tahoe. There are lots of stables on both sides of the lake that give tours of the region on horseback. This is quite expensive, but it’s worth it if you love horses. You can also just visit the stables to see them and take a few photos.
10| Come Back in the Winter
Most people come here during the warmer summer months. This is a great time to visit when the weather is warm and the sun is shining. But, Lake Tahoe also has a special charm during the winter months. When the snow starts to fall, the skiers and snowboarders flock to the resorts. If you’re into winter sports, come back in the winter and make the most of skiing and snowboarding.
A quick note, when it starts to snow, travel disruptions can occur. You should always make sure you’re prepared and bring a shovel or a snow chain.
The Takeaway Message
The lake is a great place for a fun holiday. Activities range from water and winter sports to hiking and taking in all of the scenery. Whatever you decide to do, plan to spend at least a few days here to fully appreciate what’s on offer.
